As well as being involved with the running of the conference I’ve been attending a few sessions. THis one remote and virtual labs in FE/HE engineering education raised some interesting questions.
- What about the familiarirty say a chemical engineer builds with using real lab equipment that is not necessarily part of the learning outcomes? For instance, becoming quicker with the equipment just through familiarity, the reality of faulty test tubes, worn out gear , how to screw up a clamp then back it up with another one learnt from bitter experience etc.
- Real and Virt. labs are not an alternative to real lab experience – rather appropriate in certain situations in a blended form with real labs
- The perception of is this experiment real or simulated has to be made clear: the pedagogy is different and thus the outcomes depending on the users assumptions about that.
- 24/7 access to virt/remote labs may encourage a culture of trial and error rather than careful pre-lab session consideration
